Michael Nielsen
MSgt Nielsen completed his nearly 24 year career as the Section Chief of the 86th Communications Squadron, SCPS Special Missions Flight at Ramstein AB, Germany, managing 52 personnel to operate and maintain the Ramstein STEP/Teleport Gateway for the Department of Defense in Europe and Africa.
MSgt Nielsen was born in Fremont, Nebraska on 24 December 1972. He graduated from Fremont Senior High School in May of 1991. He joined the Air Force in February 1991 under the delayed enlistment program and entered Basic Training on 22 October 1991. Throughout his career, he continued take college courses until he was able to complete his Associates in Electronic Systems in 2004, Bachelors in Electronic Systems Tech for Managers in 2009, and culminating with a Masters in Information Technology in Telecommunications in 2014.
He started his first assignment after Basic Training in June 1992 as a Wideband Journeyman working for combat tactical communications squadrons operating and maintaining multiple RF radio communications equipment types from hand-held radios, microwave antennas, to large RF tropo-scatter radio systems. In December 1993, he deployed for 4 months to the island of Haiti as a peacekeeping mission due to the lifting of UN Sanctions Embargo of the island’s as the government transitioned protection to a United Nations mission.
In 1996, he spent a year in South Korea maintaining his unit’s ability to establish command and control communication links along the southern peninsula in preparation for any event from North Korea. He then moved to Germany in 1997, where he worked for another Air Support unit providing satellite communications support for the Army’s 5th Signal Command enabling Air Tasking Orders and Video Teleconferencing to commanding officers. He then moved to Kapaun Air Station, Germany for the 3rd Space Communications Squadron providing critical data back to the United States. In 2004, he took a special duty assignment to Fort Gordon, Georgia where he was a Technical Training Instructor and Course Developer for 4-years. Following that in 2008, he moved back to Germany to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron where he was the Section Chief of the Operations and Readiness Branch, where he was responsible for deploying essential communication suites and teams to meet the demands of quick reaction deployments in austere environments in Europe and Africa, to include hot-standby Space Shuttle Recovery missions, In 2010, he moved to the 86th Communication Squadron, where he worked with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) STEP-Teleport Gateway systems. He provided critical reach back services for deployed Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine forces deployed across Europe, Asia and Africa. Finishing his career, in February 2014, the Air Force deployed him for 6 months to Al Udeid, Qatar to provide continued communications for the Afghanistan and middle east missions, where he was in charge of the largest deployed technical control facility in the world tracking and maintaining over 900 circuits to nearly every operating location in the region.
