Today's Featured Biography
William Totten
Other than Class of 1973 members that grew up with me and lived in my Bitterlake neighborhood, very few of you probably remember me. Dark red hair, lots of freckles, eyes that weren't green nor brown but weren't hazel either, could sunburn on an overcast winter's day, always carrying lots of books around, very shy.
Add 40 years, include working full time at the telephone company nights while attending the University of Washington evenings (Bachelor of Science/Psychology, 1977; Bachelor of Fine Arts, Art History, 1979), 21 years at PNB/US West/Qwest, 17 years at DSHS Child Protective Services (Sex Abuse Unit), earning a M.Ed. in Clinical Social Work (1992), family leave to take care of my Alzheimer's affected mother, then dealing with three occurrences of cancer (all intercepted at Stage 1 or early Stage 2) and you have a very changed individual. Not to mention that there is a lot less of me: no esophagus, no spleen, three feet of my lower intestine removeed, 80% of my pancreas removed and 90% of my stomach removed (there's lots of room in there).
As of 2012, I am retired and living off investments (yes, even in this shitty economy it can be done, as long as you don't have your money tied to bvundled investments with some unsecured mortgages tuck away deep inside) and live in Pioneer Square where I enjoy a 250 degree view of Mt. Rainier, the stadia (Safeco and Century Link), Alki, Elliott Bay, the Olympics and the Smith Tower. It's amazing what $12,000 bought in 1978. I am kind of decompressing from 13 years of surgeries, chemo, radiation, convalescent home stays and the deaths of my remarkable dad (Louis died in 2007) and my mother who all my friends loved and considered their aunt (Betty died exactly one week before Christmas, 2010). I do volunteer work at the word headquarters of Community Voice Mail and most weekends will find me down around Shelton at Totten Inlet where I own land.
The freckles are still there, the hair is thinner and there's red in there somewhere, but no gray. I'm told I don't look 57; I think I look like 107, but what the hell! God gave me three pretty crummy poker hands and I could have folded; instead, I played. His hand turned out to be shittier than mine. I'm still here, through surviving and full bore ahead into thriving.
Hardly ever run into anyone from Ingraham. The last person I saw was Lori Carlquist, whom I had a huge crush on when I wss in her grade class at Broadview, and that was in 2004 at Shoreline Market. I'm still in contact with Carol Buckinger (now in California and working as an administrator at the University of California at Davis); she and I are like family (why get married?) I bought Marie Ferber a Long Island Ice Tea at The DeLuxe II on Broadway in 1991 and we imbibed the one drink and got blasted and trashed all of you that weren't there. Other than that, I guess you all live on the moon or put your head down and act like your on your iPhone when you see me. Really, I can't see how anyone would recognize me. Compared to the cherubic image in then 1973 Glacier, I look more like a conservative Rabbi than the kid that used to turn six shades of red any time a teached called on him in class. Looking forward to seeing most of you at the reunion. Hope you are all THRIVING and doing lots more than just surviving. Greetings and my wishes to you all for contentment and good health. I'm outta heah.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
