Today's Featured Biography
Jack Longmate
Beatriz and I were married in 1979 (which is 10 years off but still a pretty good year). We’re lucky that our daughter, son-in-law, and their infant son (our grandson) now live in CK, so we get to see them often. Our son is about to begin at Western Washington.
I support my family as a technical writer for BAE Systems at Keyport (for a time, Steve Maxim was my boss). I also teach part-time at Olympic College as an adjunct faculty where I’ve occasionally had CK kids as students, get to interact with Louie Graham from time to time, and occasionally see such people as Shirlee and Chris, who work there too.
In my spare time (such as it is, with two jobs), I try to get out into the Olympics to do some hiking. As a vocation, I have become an advocate for non-tenured faculty, who are the majority of faculty in U.S. higher education, and have published on this subject. I’m active in a few educational associations and the faculty union at Olympic College, and attend conferences/conventions from time to time, which has occasionally enabled us to visit with people like Beth Bryson and family while attending one in NY.
One of the strongest memories about Central Kitsap was the English-History class in 11th grade that Louie Graham and the late Crayton Turner taught.
I am saddened to realize the number of fellow graduates that have passed on. I was touched that the sister of Barry Davis, who I remember well from grade school, came to our reunion.
The CK 69 grad I’ve stayed closest to is Ron Munro.
At the reunion, I was overwhelmed by the sensation of recollection that I, and I think most everyone, experienced. After 40 years, people do change, and it is difficult to recognize people. I had to look at the nametags to know who some people were, and this includes people that I went to grade school with. When one does recognize someone, it is sort as if something is recovered in the mind, and then, not only does their name seem fresh in the mind, but also a lot of details about that person come flooding back, and I can help but think that there is very strong value in going to reunions for that reason alone.
