Today's Featured Biography
steve wick
Well after high school i really didn't do much for 5 years, then i found what i thought was a great job as a machine operator, which wasn't all that great so i decided to back to school at Gateway tech in racine and enrolled in the machinist program. it was the best thing i ever did i was learning a great trade, and about a year and a half later i got a job in kenosha as a machinist everything was going right for me but then BAMM!!
i got hit with a dose of reality. in 2001 i was hit with cancer "hodgekins diease". for 6 months i underwent extreme chemotherpy, in the process the toxicty of the drug's damamged my lungs, 6 months later hoping i was done with it i wasn't, the diease was still there. the doctor's in kenosha couldn't do anything more with me so i went to Froedtert in milwaukee to a specialist. In my opinion this guy is the best doctor anywhere mainly because he saved my life. His plan of attack was to kill off my bone-marrow with a stem-cell transplant, there are 2 way's to do a stem-cell transplant, first from your self where your using your own DNA to restart your immune system, one's chance's for this procedure are 80-20. the second one is from a donor but your chances are less 60-40 that you may die, because no matter how well the match is from the donor it's just not the same, and your DNA may and will rewrite it's self. i used my own stem-cell's, but i needed to undergo more chemo to shrink the diease even more before the procedure. then after collecting my stem-cell's which is done by collecting immature stem-cell's in your blood through a machine "which is no fun", next i was ready for the transplant.
For a week straight i had massive amounts off chemo pump into me to kill off my bone-marrow, which was the easy part. after that my own immature stem-cells were introduced back into my system as a template for my DNA to restart it's self, for the next 10-12 day's all hell broke loose in my system, pain which is undescrible. Your body's inner lining's sluff's off like a snake shedding it's skin very painful, normal white blood counts in one's body is 10-15 thousand mine nosed dived to 0, any type of infection during this point and you may die, i was lucky. with no food and very little water for 2weeks, i started to come around and feel better and soon later i was released. i stayed a total of 21 day's in the hospital, and 8 months recovery time at home. from the first chemo to the last i lost 75 pounds. Now 2 years later i'm back to 100% just as strong as ever.
How's that for a life so far, would i trade it with anyone??? no way. no one should go through the crap i went through.
i have a wounderfull girlfriend thats been with me like forever, i have a great job with 2 great bosses, and finally i have my health, what more could i ask for. please feel free to e-mail me, i love to hear from the people i knew back in school.
