Today's Featured Biography     Phyllis Gorfain After our graduation from WHS, I attended Butler University in Indianapolis; I began grad work at the University of California, Berkeley in 1965 right after receiving a BA, and earned a MA in 1967 and Ph.D in 1973 (all three in English). I married a Butler classmate right after finishing college and we attended grad school together. As part of that, we conducted anthropological and folklore fieldwork in Kenya for 15 months in 1969-70, then returned to Berkeley to write dissertations. We both luckily landed jobs as faculty members in different departments at Oberlin starting in 1971. During 40 years as a tenured faculty member in English at Oberlin, I taught, did research, and published in the fields of English and Folklore, specializing in Shakespeare and folklore with particular interest in performance, games, and narrative. Sadly, after 17 years of marriage, I divorced, but then despite 12 years as a happy singlet, I even more happily remarried in 1996. My husband, Bruce Richards, is a recently retired physics professor at Oberlin. Since I have just retired as well, we are now enjoying travel, visiting family (including his children and his 4 grandchildren), and undertaking both household and creative projects. One of my aims, which I'm just beginning to work on, is to establish a not-for-profit organization I hope to call "Bard Behind Bars"-the goal is to work with prison inmates on reading and performing Shakespeare scenes.
