Today's Featured Biography
Janique Eckman
Well, lets see...I'm 68 years old, survivor of the 60's, the 70's, and worst of all, the 80's. I was a hippie...not a lot has changed. I survived a brain aneurysm in January of 2004 and the fact that I am typing this lays testament to the fact that miracles do occur and abberations live on! I have had a good life...a great life, really. I have had the opportunity to do most everything I have ever dreamed of, including singing the blues with a live band and owning my own restaurant. I have a daughter, Meghann, aged 38. She will tell anyone who will listen that Ani DiFranco is God. Can't say that I disagree with her.
I am eternally grateful for growing up in the era I did because I got to see first hand how small groups (and large) can change the world we live in. I remember the Beatles getting off of their plane on their first U.S. tour and my dad thinking they were Satan because they had bangs! And I remember Ten Years After's performance of "Goin' Home" at Woodstock with Alvin Lee jumping around like some parasitic banshee on stage. I got to see Jimi Hendrix, (not once, but 3 times!) Janis Joplin with Big Brother and The Holding Company, Moby Grape , Cream, Jefferson Airplane, John Mayall, Led Zeppelin, The Stones, and of course, the Grateful Dead. And I saw a lot of them at the first Denver Pop Festival, a 3-day event held in 1969, which I paid the princely sum of $6 to attend. I remember we got tear gassed because some of us went down into the field to dance. Now, not just me...they gassed the entire Denver Coliseum because 10 or 12 little hippie girls were dancing on the grass and not sitting orderly in their seats up in the bleachers. It was pretty weird back then. Law enforcement didn't know what to make of all that was happening and so they reacted from fear. And not a lot of that has changed, either. Thus things escalate and get out of hand and the next thing you know, you're reading about Kent State killings and the Democratic Convention riots in Chicago. I believe that it's fear that makes chaos blossom so well. Whatever I fear, I attract like a magnet, to the degree of which I fear it. But managing fear is easier said than done, I know.
For instance, one of my earliest fear memories was the idea that I would die of a blood clot in my brain. I can remember being afraid of that when I was a very young girl. And lo and behold, I developed a blood clot in my brain that almost did me in. The lesson for me has been VERY graphic indeed. But what the hell, stuff's going to happen either way. So I try to be non-resistant. Sometimes it even works.
