Isn't the internet grand? Where else could you find some of the guys you cheered on in 5th grade?-Go Billy! Or the class clown you had that HUGE crush on in 8th grade science class-I know where you are Danny! The fellow rally-squad member who carpooled with you as a junior in high school?-Here's a shout-out to Jan! Or your hot Senior Prom date? Keith-you know I'm talkin' about you! Ain't life grand?
For those of you I haven't spoken with in decades, here's my 411. I live in Northern California with my boys: husband of 28-glorious years, Jim; and two black cats, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid. Our son, Cory, is down in So Cal going to school to pursue his music passion. Hopefully, this means free back-stage passes in our future-but at this point we're just hoping he graduates...
I'm a recovering Corporate Trainer/Human Resource-type, having worked in Retail, Training, Management Consulting, Financial Services, Insurance - and pretty much every other industry with the exception of Janitorial. (I still clean the toilets at home, however...) I worked with some great Fortune 500 companies, most recently with The Hartford Insurance Group, as their Western Region HR Director (part Corporate Cheerleader-part Wicked Witch of the West during those awful downsizing years-and yes, I did own many black suits...)
My latest passion is Book Clubs! I'm the founder and Grand Poobah of the neighborhood book club, Readers in the Hood (www.readersinthehood.com). When I started the club many moons ago, I was starved for intellectual (read 'anything adult') conversation as I spent my days raising a teenage boy-who called me 'Dude'-and coaching a teenaged cheer squad who majored in giggling. Known for over-the-top fun, 'The Hoodies' brag, "If you're not willing to go overboard, don't get on the frickin' boat." We love celebrating books, authors-and ourselves!
As "The Book Club Cheerleader", I leverage my background in coaching, team building and group dynamics to help put the 'group' back in book groups. Focusing on three perspectives: The People, The Fun and The Books, I facilitate workshops and coach book clubs to get the most out of their experiences together. Acknowledging that most reading groups who fail, do so based on faulty group dynamics, my motto is, "They come for the Book, they stay for the Fun, and they leave if you screw up the People part." I edit a website as a resource for book clubs (www.bookclubcheerleader.com), write a little book blog (www.bookclubcheerleader.wordpress.com) and am working on my first book, Celebrating Book Clubs: The Book Club Cheerleader's Guide to Building a Winning Book Club.
I would love to hear from more of my 'old' classmates!
