Today's Featured Biography
Joan Brooks Jensen
Joan is from Walton County, Georgia, where she was born on Valentine’s Day, 1942. She later attended Bass High School and the University of Georgia, where she graduated in record time (less than three years) with a dual major in Sociology and Music. She grew up in a Disciples Church, First Christian Church of Atlanta, Georgia. Her marriage to a future Southern Baptist minister and Air Force Chaplain (Rev. Dr. Robert H. Crosby) in 1962 would produce three lovely children, Joy, Greg, and Jill.
Her musical skills were exercised as a piano teacher to hundreds of students over a 25- year period. Her annual piano recitals were social events that were both feared and appreciated by many budding musicians who benefited from her patient and professional teaching. While serving as the wife of a pastor and chaplain, she taught Sunday School classes and sang in choirs in 16 churches and chapels located in 9 states as well as Turkey, Italy, and England.
In 1988, after experiencing the tragedy of the death of her husband, she met a widowed chaplain, who happened to be Presbyterian, and she set out on a path of Calvinism and the Reformed faith. She managed a merged family of six children, all of whom have received college educations, married, and have children of their own. Her grandchildren now number a total of thirteen.
Following retirement from the Air Force as a chaplain’s wife in 1994, she became an invaluable helpmate in three different Presbyterian parishes in Northwest Florida. She served as a pianist, choir member and Bible study leader at Sunny Hills Community Church, Chipley, FL, where she was instrumental in reviving their women’s fellowship. At Grace Presbyterian Church, Panama City, FL, she began small group Bible studies that would later evolve into Christcare Groups that continue to this day. She was a member of their choir as well.
She faithfully followed her pastor- husband to First Presbyterian Church, Lynn Haven, FL. She was active in the women’s group and was later tasked to serve as Church Historian. She is an avid fan of history and chronicled the early history of the Lynn Haven Church. She also served as proof- reader for church publications. Once again, she became a part of the choir family. She became an Elder in 2006 and, before leaving Lynn Haven, she was honored to receive the Presbyterian Women’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Joan can be readily identified by her infectious smile, warm personality, and empathetic listening ability. She loves to travel. Her family has always come first and she has sacrificed much for her children and grandchildren. She is a woman of faith who has a comprehensive Biblical knowledge and a love for people. Hal and Joan moved to Westminster Shores December 2, 2008.
