Barbara Hutchings Knapp
Following graduation from WTHS, I attended MSU for four years graduating with a BA in Drama and Education. At the beginning of my Junior year I married and we lived in married housing for the next two years and we graduated together. Jim was drafted within 2 months of our college graduation and I taught high school in Bridgman, MI until he finished boot camp. We moved to Arlandria, VA where Jim served his two years at Ft. Belvoir, VA. Returning to the Pontiac area, we bought a house in Sylvan Lake and our first son was born in '65. We moved to a larger house in Elizabeth Lake and our second son was born in '68. In '74 we moved to Fairport, NY due to an employment move and enjoyed upstate New York until '77. At that time we moved to Orlando, FL - a good move since Jim is a Building Contractor and he could work year-round!
I have been employed as a teacher and worked from 5th grade through 12th grade at different times in different schools. I also worked almost 10 years as my husband's Office Manager when we owned our own residential building compnay, TRU-BILT. Finally I went to work at Walt Disney World as an Executive Secretary and retired in '05 after 15 years.
David, oldest son, is an attorney in town, is married to Barbara and has three daughters: Kaley (1996); Delaney (1999); and Emma (2003). Greg is a syndicated political talk show host in Kansas City, Kansas. He is married to Anne, a 1st grade teacher, and they have two daughters: Faith (1999), and Summer (2002).
I am very active in the American Association of University Women and have served as branch President and Florida co-President. I was also on the Association Educational Foundation Board of Directors for a term. I also serve on an alternative school board and am currently the Chair. Both of us are very active in the League of Women Voters (yes, it does admit men!) and I am Membership Chair for Orange County, Florida where we have approximately 600 members. Other activities we enjoy include hiking, traveling, playing bridge, working out at the gym, and gardening.
