Amy Otterson

After graduating from MSHS, I completed my undergraduate studies in Broadcast Communication at University of Nebraska. After graduation, I worked as a Sports Reporter for 02-UPN in Omaha. After a few years, I wanted to get out and see the world and accepted a position in corporate training with Outback Steakhouse working as a new store trainer. This training position allowed me the opportunity to engage with diverse populations across the Midwest and South regions. In 1999, another opportunity presented itself and I took to the skies to work as a flight attendant based in New Jersey working both domestic and international flights and was able to continue to travel across the US and abroad. After 9-11 I decided to return to school and work on my first Master’s degree in Organizational Communication at North Carolina State University (2005). While completing this degree, I was employed as a Lecturer in the NCSU Department of Communication from 2003-2009. While teaching at NCSU, I realized my passion to help others extended past the classroom and made the decision to continue my studies in Counselor Education completing my MEd in 2009. In addition to being a Licensed Professional Counselor, I am also a Licensed School Counselor and Nationally Certified Counselor. Seeing the growing need of lower income families with mental health concerns, I began working in community based counseling in 2011 as an Outpatient Therapist and Intensive In-Home Therapist with adolescents, adults and their families. I have also volunteered as a Crisis Counselor with InterAct of Wake County, North Carolina, assisting victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. In the spring of 2014, I decided to venture into private practice and has been building this practice while continuing to work with community based clients.
