Today's Featured Biography
Leon (aka Austin) Wilson
I retired in 2009 after teaching English at Millsaps College, Jackson, Mississippi, for over thirty years. Mary Lane was very surprised at my becoming an English teacher and writer. My former wife and I edited a book of Miss Lane's essays and feature articles just before she died as a tribute to her, and I am pleased that I was able to show her my gratitude and let her know the direction my life had taken.
During my career at Millsaps I taught mainly creative writing, twentieth-century literature, and film studies, and I served as director of freshman English, then as director of the writing program, and finally as department head. During these years, I was very active in the Southern Literary Festival Association, serving as vice-president four times and president twice and helping to host the festival at Millsaps three times. My poetry and fiction have appeared in a number of magazines and anthologies, and I have given many public readings of my work and have delivered critical and scholarly papers at professional conferences on various aspects of literature and on the teaching and assessment of writing. I received my PhD from the University of South Carolina (my dissertation, a collection of fiction, was directed by James Dickey, the author of Deliverance and many volumes of poetry), my MA from the University of Georgia, and a BA from Valdosta State.
Before going to Millsaps I taught at the University of Georgia, what was then called Memphis State University, and the University of South Carolina. I have two middle-aged children, Geoffrey Wilson and Laura Postell Wilson Swindell, both living in California, who are also Terry Dillard's nephew and niece, and three grandsons (Laura’s two year old and Geoffrey’s fraternal twins, now nine months old as I update this). I am happily married to Gerry, also a retired English teacher and a writer (she just had a story in the October 2011 Good Housekeeping). Gerry has four sons by a previous marriage and six grandchildren, who treat me as if I am their grandfather. We have a neurotic Siamese cat named Oliver, who treats me with great disdain. Since the mid-1970s I have called myself and been called Austin, my middle name.
My interests include gardening, bird watching, cooking, exercising, guitar playing, traveling, reading, and of course writing. Some of my favorite places I've been to are Ireland, Scotland (twice), England (three times), France (twice), San Francisco (four times), the Pacific northwest, and beaches. I love being on the coast of whatever body of water I can make my way to, I suppose I have always been trying to find some place like the St, Simons and Fernandina of the 1950's, and I have been lucky and found such a place on the Florida Panhandle a lot like that, and my wife and I will be going back there this summer as we do almost every year. After the reunion in 2010, we headed to St. Simons and then down to St. Mary's to take the ferry to Cumberland Island. That made coming home complete.
