Midge Bates Evans

After a wild college career (?) I met and married my husband in 1966. His career with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture relocated us to Washington D. C. until 1971 when we returned to Louisiana. Our family (son, Dean and daughter, Christine) moved to Washington state in 1977, where my husband began a long experience working as a self-employed taxidermist (museum-quality wildlife preservation). Of course, we as wives must support our husbands whenever we are asked to, so yes, I learned all about how to skin out animals, and listen to less than interesting hunting/fishing stories! Throughout these years, I worked as a secretary and then went into accounting, as well as taxi-ing kids to various sports and music functions. Our son traveled through Europe with the Tacoma Youth Symphony with his french horn. Then our daughter studied as an exchange student in Australia during her Sophomore year of high school.

To follow his life-long interest in hunting and fishing, my husband and I traveled to Alaska to visit friends, and subsequently bought a lovely home on a bluff in Ninilchik (a Russian village on the Kenai Peninsula) in 1993. Every year after that, we spent the summer months salmon and halibut fishing and preparing for the fall's moose hunting.

In 1999, my husband decided he was ready for a simpler life, and we moved to the Ozark Mountains of southern Missouri. There we made wonderful friends and became involved in a fantastic family at the Church of the Nazarene in Ava. Through this association, we began to travel with teams working on churches and helping with various building projects around the world. We worked in Kenya, Switzerland, Germany, Guatemala and Alaska before my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer--which finally took his life in 2005.

Since then, I have had a wonderfully full life remaining involved in the church activities where I work as a volunteer secretary and Missions coordinator. I have continued the travel/church building, travelling to Australia, Mexico, Jamaica, Alaska, and lately to the Andes Mts. in Ecuador (with a side trip to the Galapagos Islands.)

My great kids have provided 4 grand-ones for me to love on (Katherine, 12; Joey, 9; Matthew, 3; and Sophie, 3.) I keep up with them regularly--dividing my time between Missouri and Washington. Through my life so far, I have to give the glory to God for providing His protection and love. He has filled my life and my heart as only He can, and I have dedicated my life to His service.

It's a fantastic life so far--lots of mistakes but so many wonderful experiences! Can't wait to find out what's in store next!
