Roy Hopkins

After high school graduation I earned a degree in history from CMSU and a Business Administration Degree from UMKC. Between the two degrees I spend 3 months hitchhiking and travelling in Europe. I saw the midnight sun in Sweden, saw the monuments of Rome, visited Germany, Austria, and Spain, sat on the bluestones of Stonehenge, walked the white cliffs of Dover and the battle field of Hastings, spend 2 days in the British Museum in London with the Rosetta Stone and Elgin Marbles, visited Parliament and the Tower of London with the crown jewels. In Amsterdam I saw the Night Watch by Rembrandt and the art of Van Gogh. Mrs. Bryan and Miss Craddock taught me to appreciate something.

While at UMKC I started working part time for a financial services company. The company advanced me from part time work to eventually a customer service supervisor then into computer programing. After 17 years I moved on to more computer programing for a pharmaceutical software company in Overland Park and then another 8 years in the Trust Department of one of Kansas City’s largest banks. I even spent a few years, after supposedly retiring, working for the TSA at KCI, that was interesting.

Away from my professional career I tried to travel and enjoy life. I managed one company women’s softball team to a KC park’s department league championship for 4 years. We had four undefeated seasons only to lose the season ending tournament championship each year. It was the manager’s fault. For several years I rode my bicycle in the MS-150 for one company and completed in the 5K and mile runs in the Corporate Challenge for another company. I medaled in my age group in the 5K. I really enjoyed road racing and in one year ran in over 50 road races including a marathon, several half marathons and over 2 score of 5Ks, 8Ks and 10Ks. I still run, not as much, but I ran the underground Groundhog Run 5k last winter. This past summer I rode my bicycle over 240 miles on the Katy Trail from St. Charles, Mo to Clinton, MO with the MO Parks Department. We camped out on the 5 day ride.

I’ve been snow skiing for over 35 years. I enjoyed the sport and joined the Kansas City Ski Club. The Club had over 2000 members when I joined. Eventually I became ski trip director for the club and served in that position 4 different times, also served as Vice President, President of the Club, and the editor of the club’s newsletter. During my first year as trip director I planned and managed over 50 ski trips collecting and spending over a million dollars in income and expenses. I have skied in eight states,four countries and visited five continents with the Ski Club. I still ski and skied 4 days last winter at Winter Park, CO. I hope to ski in Montana this winter.

I’m single, never been married, loved many women and came close several times to a permanent relationship, but unfortunately I’m still looking. I’m now retired and try to find time to run on the park trails in KC, spend some time on genealogy, love local history, go to a lot of history presentations at the libraries or the National Archives, spend too much time reading the internet news, enjoy a Friday beer tasting and an occasional trip to Lawrence, KS to the Free State Brewery. I still have the travel bug and would love to visit Machu Picchu, Easter Island, Hadrian’s Wall and countless other destinations.
