Karen Hoeflicker Miller
In reviewing the last 50 years, it looks like I was a jack of many trades perhaps a master of none! but it has been a good life.
School and Career - Kansas State University (1969), Food and Nutrition Research, worked in major professor's (the co-developer of Tang) lab. Any success and opportunities due to incredible mentors.
Worked in public health, nutrition education research, installed nutrition software and trained clients during computer infancy, involved in media (writing PSAs, press preleases, regular TV news interviewee, source for KC Star and TV health reporters locally), healthcare, developed educational materials and programs for medical profession, consumers and educators, co-owned video production company, taught online professional level course for Kansas State University.
Active in professional organizations and boards serving at local, state and national levels. Served on advisory committees for two universities. Serve church in various capacities.
Apologies to my English educators-I hated English- loved math and science. Who would have thought so much of my career would focus on writing skills!
Family Life - 1977 married Roger an absolutely wonderful man. Successful advisor, vice president for Investment firm. Youngest of 13 and everyone's favorite uncle. No children only four legged ones.
Brother's two girls, Laura and Erin, as much as ours as his. Today serve as their surrogate parent because both Steve (Lou Gehrig's disease) and Diane (early onset Alzheimer's) are gone.
Sadly Roger died in 1999 of pancreatic cancer. Had a happy, full life together. Developed dear circle of friends and traveled extensively.
Enjoyed bird watching, photography, nature travel, skiing, music, museums, spending time with family and friends. Enjoyed landscaping the Overland Park, KS home lived in for 30 years.
Later Years - Caregiver last 16 years. 2001 parents moved into my home. Mother died in 2006.
In 2008 purchased condo near Plaza - gutted, renovated, moved in in 2010. Continue to care for father.
