Today's Featured Biography
Kathy Hefner Slaughter
It seems like only yesterday I was singing in Bill Grace's choir in Grandview - when suddenly its 50 years later! Everyone's story since our class graduation will be unique. Little did I know then that I would start with a diploma degree in nursing from Research Hospital and go on to a college graduate degree in nursing at the University of Missouri! The number of nursing positions are too numerous to describe in a 300 word essay. My jobs ranged from labor and delivery (my first love) to creating and teaching a fetal monitoring course, maternity course and a perioperative course, to then working as Hypertension Director for Utah Department of Health, and finally radiation oncology at the University of Missouri. Two of the proudest moments of my career were receiving the Outstanding Health Educator Award and the Excellence in Nursing Award.
Along the way I met the love of my life Jim, on a ski trip named the "Last Rail to Vail". We met on Valentine's Day which presaged in our marriage November 6, 1971. We were blessed with 3 beautiful children from out loving relationship, Michael, Julia, and Sara. Sara's marriage to her fiancé Jerry is scheduled for October 3 of this year. We adopted Michael in 1980 only to find out I was pregnant with twins! The twins came early and spent 3 months in the intensive care unit. Their miraculous survival along with the gift of our son gave us a life of wonder, chaos, enjoyment and fun.
We have always loved to travel and taken our kids with us virtually every place we have gone. In fact, we went to the islands and the seashore so often that Julia and Sara graduating from Mizzou, worked with Alaska Fish and Game for 3 years as observers on crab fishing boats ("America's Deadliest Catch") while Michael became a rescue swimmer for the Navy. Sara joined NOAA, and Julia obtained a master's degree in marine science! We took a wonderful trip together to celebrate their accomplishments. Our trip to Ireland will always remain one of the highlights of our lives.
As kids will do, they became older and began moving out of the house. We are empty-nesters now. We continue to work part-time at the University of Missouri Hospital - myself in radiation oncology and Jim, neuropsychiatry. We feel that God has been good to us, bestowing on us our three wonderful children, and each other and I offer up heartfelt Thanks!
