Today's Featured Biography
Leddy Beahan Hammock
I arrived in Lee's Summit with my parents, Lowell and Irene Turner, in 1963, when they began ministerial training at Unity School. I skipped my junior year and graduated in 1964, worked in Silent Unity for a time in my teens, and co-edited the yearbook of the Metropolitan Jr. College of K.C. in 1964. In 1965, I gave birth to my firstborn son on Mother's Day in K.C. at the Florence Crittendon Home for Unwed Mothers. (I wish I'd done things differently then, but my son's father, Bob Falke (cousin to Roger Davenport, who was married to Kathy Knittel Davenport back then), was not aware that I was having his child. The staff at the home said I could not deliver my child at St. Luke's unless I signed the adoption papers and agreed to let my baby stay at the home for a month "for medical reasons." They promised me that I could bring my baby home if I did sign -- a "formality." My son was born on Mother's Day, May 9, 1965. The Staff did not keep their promise and when I returned to get my baby, I was told my child had been adopted and was far away and I would not be allowed any contact. Missouri records were closed, so I searched for him for 25 years (there was no internet then). My son and I found each other in 1990 through a letter by Dear Abbey who wrote about the Soundex Reunion Registry; we have stayed close through the years. After a year in San Jose, California, I lived with my folks in St. Louis, where I met and married Randolph Schmelig in 1968; we graduated from the University of Missouri at St. Louis in 1971. Then we returned to Unity Village, where he studied for the Unity ministry and I worked on the Editorial Staff of Unity magazine. Our son, Dieter, was born in 1973. His father and I divorced and both remarried in 1985; I performed his wedding. Levi was born to me and my husband, L. Russell Hammock, Jr. (heavy metal drummer!), in 1990. Our three sons and their families stay in touch and the four grandchildren are all awesome. I earned my Masters in Theological Letters in 2002 and my Doctor of Ministry at Meadville-Lombard Theological School in 2013. I am a published author and lyricist (Twelve Women of the Chalice). Having ministered in Unity for a total of 40 years, I am serving my 36th year as Sr. Minister at Unity Church of Clearwater, where Russ is our Director of Operations and Board Member of emPower Music and Arts. Our eldest, Steve, is CFO of the Kearney Medical Group in Nebraska; Dieter Randolph is a successful web developer, popular speaker and also our Minister of Education and a Youth of Unity Sponsor here. Levi (who graduated with honors in piano performance at UM), is Asst. Manager of the Ticket Office of the L.A. Live Microsoft Theater. Life is sweet! I am grateful!

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
