In September 1954, The American Statesman started a column called "Tri-High Scoop". A student from each high school wrote about the happenings at their school and then it was published in the Sunday paper. Each school had a "catchy" name, Austin was Maroon Musings, McCallum was 'Callum Clues and Travis was Travis Drawl. Enjoy reading about the days when you were at Travis.
Travis Drawl By Carol Cotman April 27, 1958
The hopes of three Rebs have been realized this week. Bobby Clark, Travis junior, received a special letter from Rice Institute certifying his application for the math workshop to be held there this summer. Tommy Proffitt, also a junior, received a letter similar to the one Bobby received from SMU. Dorothy Martin will be going to A&M this summer on a biology excursion.
Two Spanish students from Dixieland received honors in the Spanish tests given last Saturday. Judie Wood, Rebel senior, placed first in the tests given to four-year students. Rose Dombi captured third place in the tests given three-year students.
Not to be left out, the journalism department, represented by Carol Cotman and Everly Driscoll entered the Press Conference April 19 and came out with first and second places in feature writing, respectively.
The Southside Sluggers and the Faculty Foulers had a battle royal in Dixieland week. These two infamous teams, composed of Travis' senior, football boys and the faculty men, clinched last Wednesday in an effort to obtain more funds for senior activities this spring. Miss Mary Campbell, senior class sponsor, was coach for the Southside Sluggers, and Mrs. Bernard Forster coached the Faculty Foulers.
National Secretary Week was in Rebelland this week by having Miss Nelda Marsh, member of the Towerlights Association for Secretaries, speak to a group of business minded Rebel girls. Miss Marsh spoke to the girls concerning the assets and liabilities of the life of a secretary. Prospective medical students heard a speech by Dr. W. W. Kelton last week in connection with the vocational speakers appearing to senior students in Rebelland.
The Travis A Cappella Choir received a II rating in the Interscholastic League Contest which they entered recently. Freda Crawford brought a first place solo rating back to Dixieland. Mary Jane Burt, Kenneth Southwell, and Tommie Craig, other soloists, received a II rating. A trio, Mary Jane Burt, Sharon Dillard, and Patsy Drury, was awarded a rating of II also.
Travis senior, Alice Mosteller, earned the highest honor which can be awarded to a girl in the Future Homemakers of America organization. The State Degree was given to Alice at the State FHA meeting at San Antonio April 19. Other Travis FHAers attending this meeting were Sonya Harrell, Madeline Merrill, Joy Ballard, Johnnie Lou Montgomery, Miss Margaret Ann Martin, student teacher, Mrs. Irene Falk and Mrs. Carmen Ferris, Travis homemaking teachers.
