Looking back I guess I went iceboating a lot in the winter during high school along with waterskiing and playing guitar whenever possible so as a result I missed a fair number of my high school classes. Sorry I didn't get to know many of my classmates better. Summers were mostly spent crewing on the 28 foot long E-scow sailboats on Mendota, 3 races per week. I was pretty happy to eventually be able to crew for 3 years on the #1 boat in the fleet, "Honeybucket" (Bill Mattison) since there were 25 E-scows for most of the races on Mendota. Bill is the one who helped me build my DN iceboat, especially with the mast, along with my dad.
After high school I hitch-hiked around the country, first going to California, then up to Oregon, down to LA over to Clearwater Florida and then up to Indianapolis where I saw the Indy 500. Eventually made it back to Madison. I taught sailing at UW Hoofers and studied / played Spanish classical/flamenco guitar professionally. My longest gig was 3 years at the "Pacos" restaurant, which was located at the top of State street. Eventually I played at other places also like the Holiday Inn out on East Washington. One time, the Spanish Royal Orchestra was there and I played for about 12 of them after they had finished playing at a concert in Madison. The lead violinist, who spoke English, heard me play so he went and got the conductor to also hear. He came down and after I played the violinist gave me his phone number and said if I wanted to get a scholarship to Segovia's school in Spain he could arrange that. My life took a different turn so I never followed up on that opportunity although I've thought about it many times.
I attended University of Wisconsin in 1972 from 1972 to 1975 but did not finish. After that I left Madison and lived down south for about a year. After that I drove up with friends on the AlCan highway all the way to Alaska to live there for 4 years. I lived on a commune in the middle of the wilderness (near the Glen Allen / Copper Center towns. There were 90 people there, about half of them children. We had our own sawmill since there as a lot of building with the other homesteaders so I worked as a carpenter there along with teaching school pat-time.
After that I started to get an interest in designing structures so I took a correspondence course at UW-Madison and finally came back to finish as a civil engineer at the University of Wisconsin in 1984. I went to graduate school and met my fiance, Teresa, at the University of Texas in Austin and we both received our master's degrees in Structural Engineering in 1986. We got married that spring but at that point there were no jobs anywhere in the United States. We finally got two offers, one in Albuquerque New Mexico and the other in Portland Maine at a heavy industrial engineering firm. Teresa said she has always liked snow so we went to Maine and worked there together for 4 years until getting laid off because of corporate buyouts. After that were various engineering jobs and more layoffs. The layoffs were tough but it helps that Maine truly is spectacular. Frustrated with the layoffs, we finally started our own business in 1999. To get more work we made Teresa the owner. I tell people I'm pretty sure she won't lay me off but there is certainly the possibility she might just fire my ass. Our company has been going steady for the last 23 years. We have 3 great kids. We love our kids even though it's clear they often think we are old fogies and idiots. After that I started to get an interest in designing structures so I took a correspondence course at UW-Madison and finally came back to finish as a civil engineer at the University of Wisconsin in 1984. "Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
