Anthony FUHRMAN [in Times picture]
http://www.goerie.com/news/20181224/eries-anthony-fuhrman-to-shine-bright-on-national-stage
Chris Klingensmith watched lifelong friend and fellow Erie native Anthony Fuhrman — all 5 feet 11 inches and 228½ pounds of him — strut onto the main stage in skin-tight leopard print shorts to prove without a doubt that he’s Strongman’s top dog.
Klingensmith knew Fuhrman was about to give his all to try to win the Under 105-kilogram (under 231-pound) title at the Official Strongman Games World’s Strongest Man competition this month in Raleigh, North Carolina, while also giving fans an unforgettable show.
Fuhrman is difficult to beat in professional Strongman competitions, which test the physical strength and mental toughness of the most physically-fit athletes through events ranging from heavy stone and sandbag throws and to vehicle pulls.
Then add La Flama Blanca to the mix. Fuhrman said the alter ego he created nearly two years ago, which translates to The White Flame, allows him to let loose as a competitor and entertainer without fear of failure in competitions or criticism from other competitors and fans.
Fuhrman, 30, a 12-year U.S. Army veteran who lives in Brandon, Florida, chose La Flama Blanca as a nod to the Latin culture permeating the Tampa area he has called home for three years. But that persona actually has lived within him since his childhood days in Erie.
“The best way to describe it is he’s ‘extra’ all the time,” he said by telephone. “I always had this personality I turned on and off when I competed.”
That personality would arise while he was playing against Klingensmith in Madden NFL video games or during the 2006 Strong Vincent High School graduate’s playing days on local football fields. Now, La Flama Blanca comes out in his larger-than-life persona. Blended with his powerful physique and bold, flashy wardrobe choices for Strongman competitions, Fuhrman has become a social media hit.
Fuhrman has nearly 20,000 followers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and many more fans within the Strongman world.
His flamboyance, strength and popularity recently caught the attention of casting directors from “The Titan Games,” a new NBC show premiering Jan. 3 that, according to the network’s website, “inspires everyday people to push themselves to achieve the impossible.”
Titanic challenge
