Today's Featured Biography
John Shepherd
Graduated summa cum laude from Yale with a BA and MA Soviet and East European Studies in 1991. Returned to Eagle River with my new wife, Vera Liapunov, and bought a house on top of Steeple Drive. Drafted legislation for Senator Rick Halford for a few years while also teaching at UAA (Russian, Soviet history, philosophy). Joined Army after first marriage was annulled, becoming an infantry officer and then moving on into the Airborne, Ranger and Special Forces communities. Started Duke Law School in 1996, continuing to serve in the National Guard and graduated in 1999 with a simultaneous JD and LLM in International Trade and Transnational Law. Served as a law clerk (i.e., wrote opinions for the judges) on the United States Court of Appeals in Washington, DC. Joined Skadden in 2000, where I still work across the street from the White House as a litigator specializing in energy law and federal appeals. I was recalled to active duty after 9-11, but returned to private practice after deployment and married Thuy ("Twee") Nguyen, a former lady Marine born in Saigon. We live on Spy Hill in Arlington, VA with our son, John Lee Shepherd II ("J3"), and our two collies, Fred and George. Deployed to Baghdad for the "surge" from April 2007 to May 2008. Since then, I've had three Supreme Court cases,a large number of appellate cases, and several trials. Named one of twenty national Legal Champions by the National Law Journal and Legal Times in 2012.
