JoAnn Johns Butler

After graduating from CHS, I attended Chaffey College and was married that year. I took classes to complete my AA degree when I wasn't working. When my children were out of high school, I quit my job as executive assistant to the superintendent of schools in Yucaipa, and went back to school full time to complete my BS in Behavioral Sciences with an emphasis in psychology at Cal Poly Pomona. My MA is in clinical psychology from San Diego State/USCD (a joint program). I worked for several years on federally-funded Alzheimer's grants at UCSD doing neuro-psych testing and even intervention. Prior to that I had worked with children, counseling in residential placement homes, etc. I am now counseling from home and consulting at the fitness center at Loma Linda University.

My daughter lives in Yucaipa and started graduate school last fall. She seems to be following my example. She has four children (from 23 to 10). I see them often. My 22 yr-old grandson is going to college in Orange County and spends time with Gramma every time he is in the area (he says "just to hang out with me" - which is awesome for me!). My youngest son, Kyle, also lives in Yucaipa - has one son (7 yrs old). And Derron lives in San Antonio. His son Tyler, will be 3 on 2/28. His older son, Peyton, grew up with my daughter and her kids; his mom has been in the Air Force since she graduated from high school. Peyt was born in Germany, and before he was a year old, she was sent to Korea (for 4 years - we were having problems with North Korea at the time and she didn't even get to come to the states on leave). When was 5, she was transferred to Italy and picked him up to go with her. (My daughter is an awesome mother and he made the transition well - but after 2 weeks, he called and told her, my daughter, he was ready to come home now. Children that age don't understand that they aren't on vacation. It took LOTS of phone calls every day, but he did make the transition.) Last summer they were transferred from Italy to Ohio, which is nice because we get to see them more often. She has orders to go to Afghanistan next year, with only a year left to serve for her 20-yr retirement. I am praying she won't have to go; she spent 8 months there while stationed in Italy. . .You can probably tell that my family is very important to me. I am blessed to have some of them nearby.
