Wow. It’s coming back to me… Graduation Day, 1976. Couldn’t wait for the ceremony to be over. Chaos afterward, trying to turn in the rented cap & gown. And there was Mr. VanBuskirk shaking my hand in congratulations. I think we hugged, can’t remember. What a great role model he was – kind and fit, handsome and upright.
He told me his story once: he had almost died (in a car accident, I think). He said it turned his life around. I hadn’t known until then, that he could be found almost every school day morning at 5 a.m. or so jogging around the Adams City High School track. He showed a dedication to his own life and the lives of the students that was really something I admired, but couldn’t yet emulate, of course.
Actually, I really felt confused and lost. Ready to “spread my wings” one moment, then my next turn of mind was more like the baby bird in the kid’s book, Are You My Mother? The difference being my question was, “Are you my Future?” I think that phase lasted for decades.
What happened was I started college three times before getting my English degree (with Honors, Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Denver in 1988. By that time, I’d been married to Bruce Keating, class of ’72, quite a few years. A really pleasant memory is my college graduation day with family members in the audience, my infant daughter in my mom-in-laws arms, walking across the stage and seeing them in the crowd. That was a great moment!
So the daughter in the arms was our third child, and we went on to have a fourth before calling it quits. I stayed at home as much as possible, part-time or temporary jobs here and there, full-time jobs when the finances wore too thin.
We home-schooled all four kids for varying amounts of time. Now, we still have two at home finishing their high school studies, and I work a full-time job for an independent gas and oil exploration company.
The best things in my life: my family (including the cat and all our past pets), my neighborhood, nature and the big outdoors, reading good books, and learning with my kids. I practice Falun Dafa (The Great Cultivation Way of the Law Wheel – actually much easier to say in Chinese) which has added greatly to my life. I don’t know where I would be without it.
I am very thankful for what heaven has provided. My life is in no way perfect; there are lots of things I would rather were different, but I can’t say at all that it has been boring.
I am grateful to have attended Adams City, which although it, like my life, is not perfect, was probably the best place for me. I had some really caring teachers. I never said, “thank you” enough to them, but it’s never too late…
THANKS TO ALL YOU TEACHERS WHO GAVE YOUR BEST TO US STUDENTS!
Best Wishes from Your Fellow Student in Life,
Lynne Tognoni
