Today's Featured Biography
Karl Koch
After Truman, I attended Grinnell in the cold and windy wastes of Iowa. I planned on becoming an archaeologist until I lived in Costa Rica for 6 months during my Junior year...working with a couple of Archaeology grad students, digging in the tropical sun on a little island off the coast. I became convinced that field research funding was too scarce and decided to switch my doctoral plans to Museum Conservation. However, after graduation (and my marriage to a "swimmer girl" I met after my Sophomore year at Truman) I was cooling my heels waiting for grad school to start and got a job working for a film/video production company in Indianapolis. After 3 months, they offered me a full time position and I never looked back. Two years later Cheryl and I quit our jobs and started Koch Creative Enterprises, Inc. a supplier of lighting/grip equipment and personnel to the motion picture industry in the Midwest. The next 20 years are now just a blur of 24/7 work, raising our 2 children, and . . . well it's a blur. I loved my job as a gaffer/lighting director and got to travel and see a lot of "behind the scenes" that my work afforded. And, along the way, I managed to study Karate for 3 decades, play bass in a couple of bands, and work as a Clown. But, by the time the kids headed off to college we were ready for a change. So we sold off the company, sold our home of 26 years (eventually), and moved to a little patch of woods, on a river, not too far from the ocean, in North Carolina. I played contractor on the house we built in the style of my favorite architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Hopefully we will be living in our new home, kayaking on the river, and spending time with with friends and family for a while. Life is good!
