This being the year our class will celebrate our 40th anniversary, I've been thinking back to what a wonderful experience SYVUHS was for me - I have nothing but good memories of classmates and teachers there.
I graduated from Cal Poly in 1971 with a degree in Food Administration. I met my husband, Ron Oftebro, there and after a year in the San Fernando Valley, we've been in the Santa Barbara area since 1972.
We've been blessed with 3 children, Kristian, also a CP grad, married to Jessica and father of Kaitlynn, 5 and Kyle, 8 months. They live in Lake Forest, where Kris is an applications engineer for Orthodyne Electronics, and Jessica is taking a leave from teaching 3rd grade. Erik, graduate of UCSB, is living on my parents' property, 110 acres on Nacimiento Lake Rd., working in Paso Robles as a construction site manager for a custom home builder. Karina graduated from CP in 2005, and is still settling on what she wants to do next!
I've been busy with parenting, taking care of our home and yard, working part time in the library at Dos Pueblos H.S. and more recently helping a friend learn to organize her business. I'm fortunate to be involved in several teams at our church, and wonder how I had so much time when the children were home, and no extra time now!
The biggest change in my life is having a cochlear implant in 2001. After almost 50 years of no usable hearing, I'm now really enjoying a world of sound, being able to hear the traffic and the dogs bark, the "thunk" of a baseball hitting a glove, the birds and crickets, even being able to hear perhaps 50% of speech, which the doctors told me would never happen. Miracles do still exist!
I'm looking forward to knowing more about the other class of '66 grads and how life has "evolved" for all of us.
