Casey Scott
Casey Scott's life has recently taken a turn for the best, since it's not everyday a person can boast their dreams have taken on life.
Scott, a 22-year-old Arkansas City native, has taken the one step that seems to escape many a starving and unnoticed musician the world over; the elusive record deal.
In November, Scott signed a deal with New Life Records; a rap label out of Wichita.
Scott or "CUT," as he's professionally dubbed, began rapping when he was just a fifth grader. After producing his own roughly made music video the same year, Scott decided that the art of hip-hop and rap music was his calling, and therefore, made the decision to pursue it as a career.
"I saw people on television doing it, so I decide that's what I wanted to do," said Scott. "I love rap music and I found out that I have a natural gift for it."
Since the fifth grade, Scott pursued his dream of making music. As high school came and went, Scott played basketball and baseball for Ark City High, but his mind remained focused on music and it wasn't until he approached the Wichita-based label that he realized this was the company that could appreciate his style of rap and give him a break. Like the southern rappers or the coastal rappers before him, Scott says where he's from is a major part of his art.
"Growing up in Kansas, we have a different environment. We've got a lot of the country element, but we also have a strong city element as well," said Scott. "It creates a lot of diversity."
Scott also says that being with a record label from Wichita makes it easier for his music to thrive, since he is surrounded by fellow artists who have a similar midwest mindset.
"We're trying to make a new genre of music that hits, sort of, an older crowd, said Scott. "I rap a lot about life and how the people who are going through things in their lives, aren't the only ones. It's not a commercial sound. It's not what you're used to hearing on the radio. It's real laid back man. Something you can cruise around to. It's on a day to day basis. We live day to day. Everything you hear on the microphone is real."
Now that Scott has put in the footwork for getting through the brutal process of finding a company to support his art, he says it's all up to the people now.
"We're trying to change lives," said Scott. "We want to be a good example to the next generation. We're really trying to move people and we've put a lot of hard work and effort into it."
