Essie B. HOLLIS
5/31/19 Erie Times: Essie Hollis, the Strong Vincent basketball star and 1973 graduate who became the only Erie athlete to play in the NBA
===
Strong Vincent basketball great Essie Hollis will have his number retired by St. Bonaventure in a ceremony at a St. Bonaventure home game February 16th.
Hollis and Earl Belcher each wore No. 25 and will be honored with a dual ceremony between the mens' and womens' games that day against George Washington.
Hollis, a 6-foot 6-inch forward, scored 1905 points for the Bonnies from 1974 to 1977, including the 1976-77 season, in which he averaged 21.8 points and led St. Bonaventure to the NIT championship. He also averaged 8.9 rebounds, with more than 500 in his career.
Hollis was drafted by the New Orleans Jazz in the second round of the 1977 NBA Draft. He played in 25 games with the Detroit Pistons in 1978-79, averaging 2.8 points and 1.8 rebounds. He played professionally for more than a decade in Europe.
Hollis thrilled Erie basketball fans while playing for Strong Vincent from 1971-73, scoring 1381 career points in just two varsity seasons. As a senior, he scored 49 points in a 68-53 victory over Cathedral Prep and averaged a remarkable 30.1 points in 25 games.
Hollis now lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His son, Damian, a 6-foot 8-inch sophomore guard, plays for the George Washington team the Bonnies will face on the day his number will be retired.
"That will be an extremely special night for me," Hollis, 52, said in a news release. "Having our numbers put up in the rafters with some of the greatest players to ever wear that uniform is a tremendous honor. It will be even more special with my son, Damian, in attendance. I'm excited for him to experience it with me and play in a place that means so much to me,"
Belcher arrived the season after Hollis graduated. He scored 2077 points in his career.
