David MORRIS
Tennessee State was the first university to contact Strong Vincent basketball star David Morris.
The Tigers never stopped contacting him, and that loyalty paid off.
On Wednesday, Morris verbally committed to play basketball at the Division I institution.
“They were the first to come, and I've been waiting on that offer for so long,” Morris said. “Loyalty means everything. They gave me a chance that other people missed out on.”
Morris, a 6-foot 1-inch guard, has been on the radar of colleges throughout his career at Strong Vincent.
Different schools at different times have shown interest in Morris, but Tennessee State was the only one to keep that interest high since the first day.
“When I went to visit, I loved the atmosphere,” Morris said. “I liked the school and the coaches, and they liked me. There were other schools I stopped hearing from, and Tennessee State always showed me the love, so I returned the love.”
Tennessee State went 20-11 in 2015-16. The Tigers compete in the Ohio Valley Conference, which includes Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Tennessee Tech, Eastern Illinois, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee-Martin and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
Morris averaged 20.9 points per game as a junior and received national attention with a thunderous dunk against Cathedral Prep that was captured on video. He is the leading scorer in school history with 1,542 career points.
Morris has the Erie School District scoring record, and will chase a few more milestones this coming season. Cathedral Prep's Jed Ryan owns the Erie scoring record with 1,926 points, and Morris is looking to become the first Erie boys basketball player to ever each 2,000 career points.
Morris' dad David “Motown” Morris was a star at Gannon, and has coached his son throughout his career.
“My dad is really proud of me, and so is my mom and everyone,” Morris said. “It's a big accomplishment, and I'm definitely excited.”
