Colts add former Vincent standout Williams

Former Strong Vincent star Maurice Williams was scheduled to practice with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday, one day after signing an NFL free-agent contract.

Williams, 25, played for the Arena Football League's Cleveland Gladiators and Orlando Predators this season, catching a combined 38 passes for 526 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Colts, seeking to add depth to a receiving corps led by Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton and Darrius Heyward-Bey, announced the signing Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Several Colts-related websites indicated the 6 foot 1 inch, 195-pound Williams could also be used to return kicks.

Williams played on both sides of the ball and on special teams in the AFL, where he returned three interceptions for touchdowns over the past two seasons and averaged 37.3 yards on 26 kick returns with Orlando this season, including a touchdown.

After joining Orlando in May when Cleveland placed him on reassignment, Williams overcame a slow start to become a key contributor down the stretch.

"Maurice struggled to catch the ball early on, but it was amazing to see the progress that he made throughout the season," Predators coach Doug Plank said on the team's website. "He is an extremely gifted athlete and I really believe that he has a bright future ahead of him."

Williams' best performance this season came in a 71-42 victory over the New Orleans Voodoo on July 27. In that game, he caught 15 passes for 165 yards and four touchdowns.

Williams played one season at the University of Pittsburgh, catching five passes for 100 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 62 yards on six carries as a true freshman in 2007.

He left Pitt after one season and enrolled at Edinboro but never played for the Fighting Scots. He was one of Pennsylvania's top high school recruits as a senior at Strong Vincent, where he was an all-state defensive back and District 10 all-region quarterback.

Williams' mother, Monica Jones, said her son practiced with the Colts on Tuesday. Williams was unavailable.
