Today's Featured Biography
Genevieve Gorman
What is there to say. I'm alive and well, living in Madison, WI....but not for long...
After graduating high school, I found myself in that infamous city, Green Bay, going to college. I spent the first two years convinced I was heading toward the world of accountancy and finance. Until one day, a light dawned (or was it headlights, I can never remember). I was bored with all the economics and marketing courses. So, I threw all those books away (actually, I just resold them to the university book store the following semester), and pursued an academic career in English. I graduated in 1995 with 2 bachelors degrees. One in Creative Writing and another in Literature.
Not having any idea what one might do with an English degree, I found my way back to Madison and worked downtown at the University Catholic Center for a year as a secretary.
After that year, I decided to try to move on to bigger and better things, and was hired on at Viking Cue Mfg Inc....as a secretary. But lo, they found themselves in need of someone who could understand technology, and web design, and databases. And so, I found myself becoming their resident Technology Manager, wearing many different hats. Over the last 11 years, I've gotten extensive experience in website and graphic design, database management and trouble shooting, computer hardware and software management, and just about anything else that had anything to do with the computers.
Somewhere in there (Summer of 1997, I think, or maybe 1998), I had a short story called "Crossroads" published in an anthology called Black Cats & Broken Mirrors. Unfortunately, I haven't really published much but ad copy and website content since then, but I have been working on a novel, and hopefully it will be finished before the years end to be sent to publishers.
But the story doesn't end there because I also have a life outside work and hobbies. Around 1997, I decided to take up Shaolin Kempo Karate. I was doing really well, too. In classes up to 6 times a week. Probably the healthiest I've been in my life. Unfortunately, in March of 1999, about 18 months before I would have reached my black belt, I got into a tangle with a punching bag and tipped myself over onto my wrist. Thinking it was simply sprained, I kept going back to Karate classes. But three months later, still being in considerable pain, I went to the doctor, where they told me it was broken. Not only was it broken, but it also wasn't healing. And thus I had to have surgery on my wrist, ending my Karate career for the time being. I really miss doing martial arts, and I'm hoping to find another martial art to practice upon moving to Seattle next month, but you'll find out about the move a little later down this biography.
Over the years, I've become a very avid game player. Role playing games, board games, card games, computer games, you name it, I play it. Yes, I am a big geek, like anyone is surprised. Last year, right around this time of year, a good friend of mine invited me to a gamer meet & greet at one of the local game shops. And it was there I met my love. I didn't know he was my love at the time. All I knew was that he was the only one eating the Christmas cookies that I had brought.
Through lots of emailing and chatting online and meeting for beers with the gang, we kind of got to know each other. He's terribly shy, so it took a while for me to realize that he was actually interested. But it's been a year now, and we are most definitely smitten with one another.
Back in November, he was offered a position with Hasbro affiliate, Wizards of the Coast, out in Seattle, to join their team of game designers. It is his dream job, and he had to take it. I would have been disappointed if he didn't. However, this meant he was moving away from Madison, but he asked me to join him.
So, to make a long story...well...long (have no fear, we're nearing the end now), I recently left my job of 11 years, and left Madison as well, and have moved to Seattle to be with my honey. I have recently found employment as the Head of Information Technology at Evans Glass.
And that's the tale to date.
FUTURE PLANS: Geni will attend UW Green Bay majoring in accouting.
10 YEARS FROM NOW: Geni will be an accountant for a major firm based in Chicago. She will have become an excellent surfer because of all her practice on Lake Michigan. She will have her own little stretch of beach where you can find her and you will probably end up doing some business while you are gliding across the water on your surf boards. Any business lunches will be eaten on the beach where all the sand and bugs can get in the way and the dress code will be that of a swimming suit. So remember: when you want your figures added up, go to the beach where the "Surf's Up."
