Today's Featured Biography
Greg Fry
After leaving high school, I attended 1 year of college at Brigham Young University in Utah, then worked as a missionary for my church for 2 years in southern Germany and western Austria (including Munich, Karlsruhe, and Salzburg). After the missionary experience, I returned to Brigham Young University and completed 3 more years of schooling to obtain my degree, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. During this time I also got married to a local girl from Port Orchard and had two children while still in school. After graduating from the university, I took a job in “Silicon Valley” (California) where I lived and worked for 3 years. I eventually found a job as one of the first employees of a small startup software company that wanted to open an office in the Puget Sound area. So I moved back to Washington and lived in the Port Orchard area. After about two years in the Port Orchard area my marriage came to an end. I was granted custody of my children (4 of them by then). Life as a single parent was challenging to say the least. I was also managing a small software engineering office in Port Orchard at the time and living in Bremerton. After about a year I began dating again and eventually met and married a wonderful woman (Stephanie Taylor, from Central Kitsap / Silverdale area). Shortly after that we moved our family (Stephanie and I and 4 children) to the Beaverton, Oregon (Portland) area. Stephanie took over as Mom and even though it was difficult sometimes, she did a wonderful job raising my kids with me. After a year and a half we had one child of our own and he has been a wonderful blessing to our family. I worked for two different software companies during the first couple years of living in Oregon, after which I decided to strike out on my own and started a software company. I eventually hired other people and ran this small software engineering company doing contract software development for about 7 years before selling out to a much larger company (Roxio). That company eventually got bought out also (Sonic Solutions). Due to the type of software I worked on, I ended up traveling quite a bit, mostly within the U.S., with occasional trips to Europe and Asia. I recently decided I was tired of all of the travel and high-pressure and found a non-managerial job doing software development for H.P. in the Beaverton, Oregon area. My oldest son married a few years ago and he and his wife have had two children, making me a grandfather. I’m enjoying this new role in life.
