Charles Wyman
Moved to Huntsville after graduating from the University of Denver in 1957 to work for Dr. Werner Von Braun at NASA. Earned my Ph.D from the University of Alabama in 1974 (Roll Tide!)
During my career, contributed to the original work on laser communications, invented the laser radar, directed the development of technology necessary to the Hubble Space Telescope, and was one of the principals in the design of the telescope.
I served as the original Chief Engineer on the Chandra X-ray telescope, and directed the technology program necessary to prepare for the building of its mirror system, the most complicated telescope mirror system in history.
On the side, I taught graduate engineering courses at night. One course per semester. I also consulted to industry one the side.
Retired from NASA Marshall Space Flight Center after 31 years in 1988. Went full time to consulting, and continued my part time teaching. In 1998 , I went to work full time for the company that had become my main customer. The company won a contract with the army to support systems engineering effort at the High Energy Laser Test facility at White Sands New Mexico. I served as the Chief scientist for systems engineering.
My first wife, Kathleen, passed away in 2005 after 47 years of marriage. She and I had no children of our own, but raised two nieces and a nephew.
I married my childhood sweetheart in 2006. She had been widowed 13 year earlier. We have a nice home in Huntsville. We enjoy bowling. She swims in our pool, and is an expert floral designer, and has an outstanding green thumb. Our home is over run with orchids, and a variety of other plants. Passed away, January 20, 2020
Currently retired, but available to work part time as an engineering consultant to the aerospace and defense communities.
