Today's Featured Biography
Kathy Summers Heebner
After college, I was hired as a second grade teacher at Fannett-Metal School District. During my first year teaching and just one month after our 5 year reunion, I began dating my husband, Jon. I had known him from church for over a year. We dated, became engaged, married, and became parents all within one year. Whew! We have been happily married for over 19 years.
I stayed in my first teaching position for a total of 5 years. After the birth of our second son, I took a part-time job as a reading specialist in the Tuscarora School District and earned my Master's Degree in reading. Later, I moved back into the regular classroom as I found this more satisfying.
We had 2 more children and decided that we loved parenting so much we would like to care for other children. So , we signed on as foster parents in 1995. Our youngest was 7 months old! We have helped to raise many children through the foster care agency, and we keep in touch with many of them. However, one teenage girl, Fredline, came into our hearts to stay forever. She is married now. Jon walked her down the aisle 2 years ago and she has blessed us with our first granddaughter, Gabriella. I got to be there for her birth. What a blessing!
After a total of 20 years teaching, I have "retired" from the Tuscarora School District to assume the position of "Christian Education Director" at my church. I will be taking some theology classes to become more certified in this area. I work part-time and I can work from my home with the exception of the classes I teach on Wednesdays and Sundays.
I hope to be able to care for more foster children (teenagers actually- I absolutely love teenagers!)now that I will be home more. I have discovered that being a mother is the most enjoyable job I could ever do. I will continue to substitute in my former school district. Eventually, I hope to teach undergraduate students at the college level and to be a motivational speaker for women. For now, I'm enjoying more time with my family!
I am kept busy serving on the PTO and Music Boosters (So far all of our children have been involved in band, but I'm hoping to get one singer out of the bunch.)and traveling to sporting and youth events. This summer, I have faced the incredible challenge of keeping 3 teenage boys and many of their friends fed! (Yes, we have a pool!) Now that's a job!
I wish all of you life's best.
I hope to see many of you at our 25th reunion! Go CASHS class of 1980!! . . . "We really are great!"
