Jane Rojahn Meyers
Jane Rojahn Meyers (1924-2003)
by Joseph Michael Meyers
York Daily Record (published Monday, July 14, 2003) [with minor corrections made here]
Jane Rojahn Meyers, a loving mother and caring nurse to those in need, died Friday, July 11, 2003 at 5:00 p.m. at Rest Haven after a lengthy illness. Jane was born in Dallastown on October 14, 1924, the fourth child of Isaiah H. and Flossie Sechrist Rojahn. She enjoyed growing up with family and close friends nearby in that small town’s atmosphere. As a young girl and probably because of her older brothers, she described herself as a tomboy, who enjoyed sports, especially softball and just being outdoors. She was graduated from Dallastown High School in 1942 and recently enjoyed her 60th reunion with her classmates. At the time of this country’s great need during 1942-1943, she worked at York Dental Supply to earn funds to attend nursing school and then help in the war effort. She realized her goal and was graduated as a registered nurse from Maryland General Hospital in 1946, too late to serve her country in war but in time to care for her ailing parents.
Jane’s nursing career became secondary in her life shortly after being introduced to the late James Harry Meyers (1923-2003), her husband for 54 years. They met on a double date with Jim’s brother Joe in 1947, were married in 1948, and lived in Dallastown. Jane and Jim had two daughters and four sons, who survived them: Joseph Michael Meyers of Athens, GA; James P. Meyers of York Haven; Janeen Meyers Coffin of Camden, DE; John E. Meyers of Bridgeville; Jeremy I. Meyers of Shamokin; and Jennifer Meyers Taylor of Felton. Jane is also survived by 14 grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She and her older sister, the late Hope Rojahn Eberly (1920-2000), her late brothers John (1908-1989) and Philip Rojahn (1912-1972), and only surviving sibling, Joseph D. Rojahn of Dallastown, raised their families (27 cousins) in homes just a few blocks apart in Dallastown. In 1973, she and Jim moved to Jacobus, PA. Jane maintained her career skills while raising a family by taking occasional nursing assignments. After that, she provided home nursing care by working as a health aide for the Lutheran Social Services.
Jane and Jim retired in 1983 and enjoyed traveling to New Zealand and visiting relatives and friends throughout the United States. They visited Ralph and Jennette Evans of Cortland, Ohio on occasions from the 1950’s to 1990’s. Jim and his platoon sergeant, Ralph, survived the Battle of the Bugle and Battle at Remagen (Bridge) in Europe during WW II, for which their company received two Presidential Unit Citations. Jane supported veterans through her membership in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 605 of Dallastown. In retirement, Jane devoted volunteer time to the Rescue Mission in Dallastown and promoted their efforts to assist those in need, especially in Dallastown.
Jane and Jim enjoyed simple things together, but especially seniors’ team bowling, summer church picnics, and visiting their retreat in the mountains of north-central Pennsylvania. Jane enjoyed helping people and accepted everyone. She devoted her life to her husband, children, and family. Her nonjudgmental personality and faith in God were evident throughout her life, even when she was under Hospice care. We miss her.
Viewing will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Austin H. Eberly Funeral Home, 104 W. Main Street, Dallastown. Viewing will also be held Tuesday from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. before the memorial service, which will begin at 10 a.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 109 E. Main Street, Dallastown. Rev. Roger H. Mentzer will be officiating. Burial will follow at Blymire’s Cemetery in Dallastown.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Children’s Sunday School, Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 109 E. Main Street, Dallastown, PA 17313.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
