Today's Featured Biography
Robert Lyon
After graduating from York College I made my way west by hitching rides on lumber trucks. By the last stop (Pittsburgh) my luck and money had run out so I took a job cleaning port-a-pots at a rest stop. I lived behind the rest stop for several years learning trucker "lingo" and earning extra money scrubbing mud flaps and polishing the chrome trucker-babes. At last my luck changed and I had saved enough money so I caught a ride with a rather unusual woman with a temendous beard. Unbeknownst to me I had found myself in a convoy of circus folk.
Rather eccentric but nice enough I figured and there was plenty of work. With my experience at the truck stop I was quickly promoted to the elephant pens where my years of experience finally paid off.
Being a carnival barker takes a group of people to look at a sideshow freak called the FEATHERED HEN as she tells the story of the freak. Cleopatra was a trapeze artist with the carnival. She knew that Hans, a midget, had a mad crush on her, and flirted with her so he would give her money. Frieda, Hans' fiance [also a midget], warned Hans that Cleopatra was just taking advantage of him. Hans would not listen, fooling himself into thinking Cleopatra loved him back & often visited her in her trailer.
This is where I come in.....
Venus, the carnival's pretty seal trainer, moved out of strongman Hercules's trailer when she realized he was no good. She and Phroso, the clown became intimate friends, but they still cared about what happened to their friends, the carnival freaks. Among the happier events: the human skeleton and the bearded lady had a child-a hairy baby girl. Violet Hilton agreed to get married just like her twin sister, Daisy. Schiltzie, one of the pinheads got a new dress.
Hercules and Cleopatra had an affair. I was pissed but got over it shortly thereafter. Afterwards they laughed at Hans behind his back for thinking she was really interested in him. But when Frieda let it slip that Hans was heir to a great deal of money, Cleopatra realized she & Hercules could become rich if she married Hans.
After the wedding, there is a celebration. Cleopatra & Hercules were extremely drunk & openly cozy with one another and I joined in. Frieda became upset and left. Hans was humiliated. When all the freaks started chanting to Cleopatra that she was now accepted as one of them, she became enraged at what she considered an insult, and began mocking them. Her true hatred of the freaks was revealed in her drunken tirade and I was no longer in the mood!
After Hans' inheritance, Cleopatra began giving him poison, a little at a time, saying it was medicine. But Hans became aware of her plot & spit out the poison behind her back. Meanwhile, the other freaks started to spy on Cleopatra & Hercules.
One stormy night, as the circus caravan began slowly moving to the next town, Hercules tried to break into Venus' wagon to rape her, but Phroso interfered. During their struggle, the wagon overturned, throwing them out. Just before Hercules got the upper hand, he was struck by a knife. Pinheads, Johnny Eck [the boy with half a torso], Randian [the Living Hindu Torso], and other freaks chased him through the forest. For Hercules, there was no escape!
Meanwhile, other freaks confronted Cleopatra with the fact that she's been poisoning Hans and I. They pulled out knives & guns. She also ran through the forest, but they were close behind....
Cleopatra Is the Feathered Hen! She is so mutilated, she is now more chicken than woman. She squawks. Now she is one of the freaks in reality.
