Today's Featured Biography
Sharon McCarty Schemel
Following high school, I attended Mansfield University & earned a BS in Business Administration. My career search was delayed by a brief back issue right out of college, but by fall of '86 I stumbled into a career in retail management with Hess's Department Stores. I began in the West Manchester store & then moved to their main store in Allentown, PA. Several months later, I moved to NJ to begin a career with Gap, Inc. I managed stores for Gap/Old Navy for 13 yrs & then transitioned into an Administrative Assistant role, for which I lastly worked in Manhattan. After 23+ yrs with Gap/Old Navy & living in NJ, I moved back to York in 2011! I most recently worked in Owings Mills, MD as an Executive Assistant for the CEO/Founder of Employment Background Investigations, Inc. My boss sold EBI in Dec 2021, & my employment with the acquiring company ended in Nov 2022. I took a couple years off, and started working at Codorus Church as their Office Manager in August 2024.
I met my husband, John, in 1988 & we have been married since 1991. We never had any two-legged children, but our kids are our dogs, who have all been dachshunds. We're counting the days until we can both enjoy retirement together, which will hopefully arrive in 2025.
After growing up with a dachshund & fondness for the breed is a family trait, I became actively involved in with Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue (www.c2cdr.org) in 2006. It's nice to be able to blend my personal life with a charitable passion. Other events I've frequently supported over the years have been GMHC-Gay Men's Health Crisis (in memory of our classmate, Jay Hildebrand), American Diabetes Association (in memory of my Dad) & various Breast Cancer fundraisers (in honor of all of those struggling with this disease). I also try to stay involved with my sorority (ZTA) alumnae group, whos active in various charitable activities. Community service is a fulfilling part of my life; I think it is important to "give back" in whatever way I can.
I've enjoyed serving on our class of '82 reunion committee for our last three reunions. For six yrs (2009-2014) I served as the chairperson for the Annual DAHS ALL Alumni, Family & Friends Picnic. The picnic lasted for ten years & was a fun way to reconnect with former classmates & meet alumni from all ages. I'd love to see the Alumni Picnic return, if anyone is interested in helping to get it going again.
I'm enjoying being back in York. One of the best things to happen after moving back to York was reconnecting with my musical side. In 2015, I joined classmates Tom Kerns & Darin Green in the band Stone Biskit. Darin has since left the group, but Stone Biskit continues to play in the area as a trio, covering classic & southern rock & some blues tunes. Come out & see us sometime (https://www.facebook.com/stonebiskit/)!

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
